I2 Metre World Championship 2026

The 12 Metre World Championship brings together the world’s finest Twelve Metre yachts in a unified international competition. In 2026, the Championship will be contested across two regions, North European, and the Mediterranean, conducted in distinct divisions that reflect the breadth of the class.

  • When the America’s Cup moved on from the 12 Metre class after 1987, owners, sailors, and class leaders faced a defining question: would these yachts become static museum pieces, or would they continue to race at the highest level?

The answer was the creation of a true international championship — an event that would preserve the boats not simply through admiration, but through competition.

From that post–America’s Cup transition, the 12 Metre World Championships emerged as the premier global regatta of the class, bringing fleets together under unified measurement standards and restoring the yachts to an international stage.

The World Championships were established to meet three essential objectives:

    • To create a single international pinnacle event for the class
    • To ensure consistent measurement compliance and fair competition
    • To provide a compelling reason for owners to restore, maintain, and campaign their yachts

The Worlds provided continuity at a critical moment in the class’s history. Rather than fading after 1987, the 12 Metre fleet reorganized around structured international racing.

  • From its inception, the Worlds were conceived as a rotating international event. Rather than being fixed to a single harbor, the Championship moves among regions with active fleets and strong organizational capacity.

This rotation strengthens international participation, supports regional fleet development, and reinforces the truly global identity of the class.

Over time, the World Championships have been hosted in major 12 Metre centers across North America and Europe, reinforcing the event’s international stature.

  • Today, the 12 Metre World Championship stands as:

    • The highest competitive expression of the class
    • A catalyst for restoration and preservation
    • A gathering point for owners, sailors, designers, and historians
    • A living bridge between heritage and active competition

More than a regatta, the Worlds ensure that these yachts continue to fulfill their original purpose — to race at the highest level.

  • As the International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) strengthened its role as the global governing body, the World Championship became central to the class calendar. Because the 12 Metre fleet spans multiple design eras, the Championship adopted a divisional structure to ensure meaningful and fair racing among comparable yachts. These divisions typically include:

Vintage — early yachts, generally pre-1937
Traditional — mid-century designs, including many post-war yachts
    Modern — post-1968 designs, including America’s Cup-era boats

This format allows the Championship to celebrate the full evolution of 12 Metre design while preserving competitive integrity.

The Marstrand Station operates under the management of Göteborgs Seglarklubb (GSK), a club with deep roots in the 12 Metre Class. GSK has organized prestigious events such as the Marstrand 12 Metre Cup, the European Championships, and the World Championships. Many of GSK’s members were key figures in Sweden’s America’s Cup challenges in 1977 and 1980, campaigns that featured the iconic 12 Metre S-3 “Sverige”, designed and helmed by Pelle Petterson himself.

When GSK co-hosted the 12mR European Championship in 2019 alongside Skagen, Denmark, its leadership in the Marstrand Station was further cemented. The collaboration underscored the club’s enduring commitment to the 12 Metre Class and to Marstrand as a vibrant stage for classic yacht racing.
